Becoming one of the 25 entrepreneurs on the StartupBus Miami, I instantly recognized we all have one thing in common -  our entrepreneurial spirit.  Our skills and backgrounds are very diverse, and yet we all have a passion for business success.

We are willing to brainstorm new ideas, work long hours and follow a “good for all” ethic.  Everyone contributes their skills as we’re launching our fundraising and media campaigns.  We all know what has to get accomplished in a few short days and we’re busy getting it done.  This is the stuff good teams are made of – we are after all, competing against 5 other busses!

There are lots of ways to describe what I’m talking about…  Ambition, Leadership, Innovation, Risk Taking, Talent.  This is the stuff I believe a person is born with.  Either you have it, or you don’t!

Ted Turner said that “his son was an Entrepreneur because he didn’t get a job”. While I know that’s true today with our high unemployment, I’m not sure that’s going to work for everyone.

Sure a person can learn about the art and science of business, but the entrepreneurial spirit is born.  For many years, I worked for other people, developing my skills and gaining important business knowledge.  Every day was a challenge because I felt pinned down, doing what was expected, rather than what I was meant to do.

I walked away from my fancy job (with nice salary) and took the plunge into entrepreneurship. It’s been quite an adventure of ups and downs which I wouldn’t change for anything.  Now I’m helping other people develop their skills and encouraging them to become business owners too.

As for the “profit” part of this post, I am telling you to go and get a business biography to read.  Learn from the masters and be creative as you think about your business.  Apply the wisdom of Jobs, Gates, Branson, Walton and Kroc to your operations and you’ll find more profit.

Because of my Startupbus adventure, I’m reading  “The Startup Game: Inside the Partnership between Venture Capitalists and Entrepreneurs” by Bill Draper.  What are you reading?  Why don’t you tell me about it…  Kirsten

  • Kirsten, This is an absolutely beautiful post you’ve written. As a fellow buspreneur, you have so accurately described the spirit and enthusiasm of group. It’s been amazing to watch and be part of this “instant” community. I also believe you hit the nail on the head with your view on entrepreneurs and the fact that is very much integrated within the personality of an individual.

I cannot wait to meet and share this experience with you. P.S. Bring the book with you, I’d love to take a look : )
