Being an entrepreneur requires strength and courage. It takes a certain something to start a new project, especially one that your life could depend upon.

Some people are just not cut out to work for someone else. Others are driven by a dream or idea that can’t stop thinking about. Maybe the lack of employment has created the need to start a new business.

Whatever the reason, the fact remains that when you’ve been bit by the bug, you’ve got to scratch it!

You won’t be the only one out there doing it on your own. One out of every 14 people in the US is a business owner. They don’t all have MBAs or lots of money to get started. Actually, most start out small but with big goals.

My point is that you have to start somewhere and why not today?  Believe me, people have hundreds of reasons why not today.  If you surround yourself with entrepreneurs, they will encourage you to join them.

Here Are My 5 Reasons Why You Must Start Today

  1. The economy.  Historically after a 10 month economic recession, the following 50 months have significant growth. Let’s say the recession was during 2009-2010 – then watch out 2011 is cranking up 4 years of growth.
  2. Everything is cheaper. From real estate to equipment or consumable goods, prices are low.  Everything is negotiable these days and it’s time to make good deals.
  3. You can hire better qualified people. Use those high unemployment statistics to your advantage.  Consider offering shares of a startup to potential employees.  This concept gets top talent for lower payroll costs, but more importantly, they will deliver 110% because they are owners too.
  4. Business ownership has tax considerations. While it shouldn’t be a reason to open a business, there are personal income tax advantages for entrepreneurs.  If you already have a “hobby” that you invest time and money into, why not turn that into a business with qualified deductions?
  5. You’ve lost your job and you have to do something.  Desperation can be quite a motivator and turning that lemon into lemonade can be quite rewarding.  Look at that resume and consider how you can profit from your experience.

One of the best ways to figure out how to get started is to talk with someone who already owns their business. Ask them how they got started. Find out how they found their first customers. Everyone approaches the start-up differently, but we all started at the beginning.

If you’ve got the itch, I’m glad you found my website. I love to talk with people about starting a company.

This is my fifth business endeavor in the past 10 years. My first was wildly successful and was sold to my partner when we reached a million in sales. The second one evolved into my third because they were in a related industry. My fourth was the birth of my marketing consulting business which was my original career back when I “had a job”. Now, I’m online and reaching around the globe.

It’s been up and down but I wouldn’t trade it for the 9-5 ever again!  I came across this quote which made me smile.

“People always overestimate how complex business is.  This isn’t rocket science – we’ve chosen one of the world’s most simple professions.”  Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric.

Jack’s right.  Understanding business principles can be learned.  You can learn what matters most and then focus on making that work for your business.  Don’t worry if you’re a complete beginner, make the decision to start and then get busy!

I’m here to help you get started – just ask me a question.   Kirsten Peck
